If your guy is a history buff it can be difficult to buy something that he will really get a kick out of for Christmas. You have probably already wrapped up enough history books – although new interpretations of much-studied periods are always coming onto the popular market.
And if you are not quite as passionate about feudal Japan as your man it´s easy to fall into the trap of selecting the wrong book, say 16th rather than 15th century!
Think laterally for historical Christmas gifts
Trying taking a lateral look at gift buying. There is a huge range of historically themed console and PC games on the market, whether for his iPad, smartphone or old-fashioned desktop. Almost every period of history has been given the video treatment, far beyond perennial classics like Rome Total War, Civilization and Age of Empires.
Or why not check out some period wargames online? Again there is a world of choice with everything from the ancient world (Agricola), through feudal Japan (Ikusa), Civil War (Battle Cry) and the Second World War (Axis & Allies).
Just be prepared to have to immerse yourself a little more into his historical worlds if he hasn´t got enough friends and needs someone to be the Celts in Risk Godstorm!
