Christmas markets

Gendarmenmarkt Berlin

Legend has it

German Christmas markets have a rich history dating back to the 14th century.  The Christmas market in Dresden, which began in 1434, is one of the oldest on record and draws millions of visitors annually.  Weihnachtmarkt or Christkindlmarkt, as they are called in Germany and Austria, mark the beginning of Advent and are held in many cities around the world.

Sweet sights

From the UK to the US, German Christmas markets are a beloved holiday tradition.   Festive foods, such as Kaiserschmarrn (sweet pastry) and Stollen (Christmas cake), sausages and gingerbread are popular foods enjoyed at Christmas markets.  Mulled wine, apple cider and hot chocolate are offered with an extra shot of alcohol (Schuss) to keep you warm on those chilly winter days.

Christmas markets are an ideal place to buy festive goods and special gifts, such as wooden toys and handcrafted decorations.  Many markets now offer music performances and rides for children.  Although most are open in the late morning, German Christmas markets are best enjoyed in the evening when they squares and stalls are illuminated with the Christmas spirit.
