Legendary sights
With its rich history and bustling metropolis, Christmas in London is a truly magical experience. The legendary Christmas tales from Charles Dickens have added to the city’s allure, making it an attractive holiday destination for people across the globe. London is steeped in centuries of tradition and Christmas is a time to fully enjoy this historical city.
Pass the mince pie
Christmas is celebrated on the 24th and 25th of December. Families and friends gather together to exchange gifts and to enjoy traditional dishes, such as roast turkey, potatoes, minced pie and the beloved Christmas pudding. Christmas crackers are another popular Christmas Day tradition invented in 1846 by a London Baker. These brightly wrapped tubes make a loud cracking sound when opened and contain a small gift in the form of a toy or trinket.
This capital city offers many impressive sights during the holiday season. Winter Wonderland at Hyde Park, The Dock Christmas Market and the Cologne Christmas Market are just a few of the many German Christmas markets London has to offer. Christmas Fairs are another popular holiday pastime and with a wide array of goods from organic and ethical trade to antique and quirky, there is something for everyone.
Trafalgar Square is to London as Times Square is to New York and each Christmas a magnificent tree is donated by the city of Oslo and lit with over 500 lights. During the ceremony, Christmas carolers fill Trafalgar Square with their sweet and festive harmonies. The Christmas tree tradition began in 1947 as a token of appreciation from the Norwegians for Britians support during WWII.
London is renowned for its theater scene and each Christmas the city lives up to its reputation with their impressive line-up of live entertainment shows. Enjoy a memorable choral performance at the Royal Albert Hall or take in a spectacular cabaret show at the infamous La Soiree theater.
