Christmas in Paris
Chic c’est la vie
Unequivocally chic and romantic, Christmas in Paris is an unforgettable experience. During the Christmas season, the beauty of Paris reaches its pinnacle; with the Eiffel Tower and the Champs-Élysées illuminating the city from November to January. Other notable light displays include those along the Rue Montorgueil and Rue Mouffetard, in the Place Vendome and Notre Dame.
The main Christmas celebrations take place on the 24th and 25th, although some children receive gifts from St. Nicholas on December 6th. Most businesses are closed on Christmas Day and families and friends gather together to enjoy fine food and wine. Traditional French foods include oysters, snails, foie gras, smoked salmon, caviar and roasted turkey or goose. Mulled wine, Beaujolais and champagne are the drinks of choice during this festive season.
c’est magnifique!
The impressive window displays at Printemps and Galeries Lafayette are not to be missed, as is the four-story couture Christmas tree at Lafayette. Explore the charming Christmas markets, such as La Defense, Marche Saint-Germain and Place Saint Sulpice. Take advantage of the mild weather and enjoy a day of ice skating and merry-go-rounds at the picturesque Hôtel de Ville rink or the City Hall.
Christmas mass is idyllic way to spend Christmas evening in Paris. Eglise St-Germain-des-Prés, Eglise de la Madeleine, Montmartre’s Sacré-Coeur and the Notre Dame have both early and midnight mass services for those who want to enjoy Christmas in a historic setting.
